Nicaragua, Part 5: Goodbye

Tomorrow I hit the Ticabus at 6am for Liberia, Costa Rica. It’s been a good time here in Nicaragua. There’s not a lot to say about the country or the infrastructure or anything like that… hell, in most parts, it’s a hot, dirty, underdeveloped place. But the people here are fabulous. Everyone was always willing to help me out when I didn’t know where to go or needed something. Except for one drunk guy, nobody ever messed with me or bothered me at all.

And hey, this place is heaven if you’re an old school bus from the United States. I rode on more than one that was made near my hometown, and saw another that still said “Albuquerque Public Schools” on the side of it. School buses don’t die, they go to Nicaragua.

I spent the last three days at Selva Negra. Amazing. The first morning I woke up there, I went on a tour given by the owners. We saw most of the production facilities and they told us about how just about everything on the farm is recycled and sustainable. While on the tour, I had the fortune to sit by a really nice girl named Magally. She’s from California, but her parents are originally from Nicaragua, and they are down here on vacation for a few weeks. We ended up talking for a while after the tour… she’s really smart and interesting and cute. Unfortunately they left later that day. But we’re gonna keep in touch. I also met a former American who has been living down here for 27 years. He was visiting with some friends from San Francisco. They gave me a ride into the park, and ended up buying my dinner on their last night there. Great people.

Some of the most memorable moments in traveling are from meeting other travelers.

During most of my two whole days at Selva Negra I walked around looking at the production facilities. Talked to the workers. Took lots of pictures. Etc. I’ll write more when I have the pictures to back it up, because a lot of it wouldn’t make sense as text-only.

The food there was really good. I had bacon cheeseburgers most of the time, because they were cheap. But the last night there I splurged on some sauerkraut and sausages and potatoes. It was so much food that, despite not eating much that day, I couldn’t finish it all.

Today, I rode in buses. Almost all day. That’s the worst part about traveling.

Yeah, more later. I’m hungry. Time to go find some pizza.

All I Want for Christmas…

*drool*

This is exactly what I’ve been waiting for ever since I started recording live shows three and a half years ago. YUM! M-Audio Microtrack

That, and a cheap car / motorcycle to get me to shows in Atlanta.

Reasons I Like Esteli

1) Saturday night they had a big street party. I asked someone what it was for. They said “La fiesta de compra”. I said “Huh?”. They said “Party for shopping”. Hahaha!

2) Sunday night there was a big parade. Of cowboys and cowgirls. Nothing else. Just people riding horses. And there was a huge float sponsored by the national beer company, Toña… with really hot cowgirls dancing on it. Think Laker Girls. Only in Nicaragua.

3) There’s a restaurant here called Pizza Hot. A few blocks down the street is another place, Hotter Pizza. Hahahaha!

4) Today when I woke up, the restaurant located in the little hotel I’m staying at was playing The Best of Abba… yes, I know Abba when I hear it. I permanently borrowed the albums from my mom. Thanks mom.
