Bike!

Surly LHT frame

I’ve been lusting after this bike frame for a while now. It’s around $400, plus another $400 or so to add steel couplings that would allow me to split it into two pieces (for packing to take on a plane). Sounds like a lot, but it’s really not, if you consider that an airline will charge you $100 to take a bike as one of your pieces of luggage on each trip. Two round trip flights with the bike and the couplings are paid for. And this bike frame should last many many years.

I’m still trying to figure out if I’m going to Costa Rica this summer (to EARTH Uni) or to California to do some work on various organic farms. Either way, I want to take a bike and do some touring. Right now I’m leaning towards California, only because I have no idea what I would really do in Costa Rica exactly, and I have friends in Cali that I haven’t seen in years. Although it would be a hell of a lot easier to get scholarship money for Costa Rica. We’ll see. I’m still not quite out of debt from the last time.

I have read that the LHT has an ovalized top tube that causes complications for installing S&S couplers. You should probably do some research about this before you drop any money on a frame. Check the following for example:

    Thanks for the info!
