Bike!

Surly LHT frame

I’ve been lusting after this bike frame for a while now. It’s around $400, plus another $400 or so to add steel couplings that would allow me to split it into two pieces (for packing to take on a plane). Sounds like a lot, but it’s really not, if you consider that an airline will charge you $100 to take a bike as one of your pieces of luggage on each trip. Two round trip flights with the bike and the couplings are paid for. And this bike frame should last many many years.

I’m still trying to figure out if I’m going to Costa Rica this summer (to EARTH Uni) or to California to do some work on various organic farms. Either way, I want to take a bike and do some touring. Right now I’m leaning towards California, only because I have no idea what I would really do in Costa Rica exactly, and I have friends in Cali that I haven’t seen in years. Although it would be a hell of a lot easier to get scholarship money for Costa Rica. We’ll see. I’m still not quite out of debt from the last time.

Sie kommt aus Deutschland

Last night, we cooked dinner together for the second time. As I was preparing things, she looked at me with a giddy gleam in her eye and said “Can I be the negro again?”. At this moment I had to grab the counter to prevent myself from falling on the floor in a fit of hysterical laughter.

It worked though. She got to cut up the veggies and dry the dishes.

Speaking of Old Stuff

I have no idea why, but I felt compelled to listen to some old Velocity Girl tonight. Vintage 1994. In my mind, there is absolutely no way this album is 12 years old. I remember playing this one really loud in the old ‘92 Ford Probe. Great memories. Combine this with Superchunk, Versus, Small Factory, the Pixies, Sebadoh, Unrest, Pavement, and Archers of Loaf and that pretty much sums up my musical tastes from 1993-1996.

Needless to say, if you know those bands, you know that music hasn’t gotten any better since then. Is it even possible? So many new bands are absolute shit. Even a lot of the good indie bands now just sound too overproduced, like they are searching for whatever is the sound-of-the-moment, instead of just playing what they feel. It all just sounds the same. Not all newer stuff is bad though.

The Dismemberment Plan was amazing. But they broke up. However, their last show in Atlanta in June 2003 was one of the best shows I’ve ever been to.

+/- (plusminus) is amazing, but that’s a given since they’re former Versus. I’m anxiously waiting for their new album. These guys get better and better with every release.

The American Analog Set is still pushing out good tunes, but their days are numbered. Probably not a bad thing though, just to leave a good thing while it’s still good. They’ve put out 6? 7? 8? albums already. I’ve lost count.

Seriously, I can’t think of a single band off the top of my head that has meant as much to me as the bands that were around in 1995. The last 10 years have just been a downhill slump as far as good indie music goes, with a few exceptions. I downloaded the top 20 or so indie/etc albums of 2005 and only about 4 or 5 of them really impressed me. My reaction to the rest was “Hmm, who did these guys rip off?” or “Hmm, this song is good, but why are the rest of them shit?” or “What the fuck? This really sucks.”

It’s kinda lame when — and I’m not disrespecting these artists at all, I’m just saying — some of the most remarkable albums of the year came from Bruce Springsteen and the Rolling Stones. What’s old is new again? Sometimes you never know.

I’m Sure As Hell Not Getting Any Younger

The other day I was thinking about the fact that my 28th birthday is in 19 days.

That really blows my mind. I used to think 28 was so old. Now… not so much I guess. In a lot of ways I still feel like I’m 23. In other ways, I definitely feel 28. In 4 months it will be 10 years since I graduated high school. 10 years! What the hell??? That’s the same amount of time from 2nd - 12th grade. Doesn’t seem like it. Where did all the time go? Sometimes I wonder. I’ve done a lot of shit in the last 10 years, can’t say I regret any of it, but sometimes it does weird me out how fresh my memories of high school still are. I can think about things that happened 11 years ago like they happened this past summer. 10 years. Wow.

Life is good though. I don’t have much to complain about. Living on the farm is awesome. I’ve met several amazing people since I’ve been back. Lost touch with a few others, which is disappointing. But the people that really matter are still here (see: Kerry Jones). Life is life is life is life. I keep getting older, and I keep thinking it really doesn’t damn matter… I’m still the same person I always have been, and I probably will be when I’m 75.

Here’s to the next 28 years. And the 28 years after that. 28 years all the wiser.
