My ass is currently getting kicked by almost every class I’m taking right now. Most responsible, however, is HORT 4210 Postharvest Plant Biology. Holy shit. Is this what I have to look forward to in grad school? Maybe I should get a PhD just for passing this class. I think I can pull off an A if I study hard but I will be totally content to get a B in this one.
Plant Pathology isn’t too bad. Our labs are actually really interesting. It’s nice to actually learn how and why diseases infect plants. Today in lab we looked at blight on tomatoes and potatoes. Good stuff.
Greenhouse Crop Production isn’t terribly difficult, but it is time consuming. There are about 100 flowers that I’m growing right now (most will be flowering for Valentine Day) and they need almost daily care. Our teacher is awesome and a large part of why I like the class is that I’m learning from a reknowned industry professional. Although, honestly, I don’t see myself doing much in the greenhouse business once I graduate.
Pesticides and Transgenic Crops is just… boring. It’s a hour and 15 minutes long, at the end of my day on Tuesday and Thursday, and it damn near kills me every time. Right now we’re just reviewing dozens of different insecticides. The greatest challenge is just staying awake for each lecture. Not sure how this one will turn out.
My favorite class is Crop Ecology. The professor really knows his stuff and although I’m familiar with a lot of the material already, I’m still learning a lot. He passes out copies of recent related articles that are informative, I just wish it was more interactive. There are 6 students, but only 3 of us ever say anything. That’s a bit annoying sometimes. But I met this very interesting and cute german girl in the class and we pass notes back and forth like we’re in 3rd grade again. The best part is that she is also going to be interning out here at the farm!
Next week I think I have a test in every class. Yay. More later.
Is this boring? Probably.
