Yes, the Rumors Are True

I am, in fact, friends with Miss Panama.

(I don’t know which title she holds, but it’s different from the Miss World contest.)

Her name is Leidys. And she totally gives me hell for not being fluent in spanish, and says that we need to practice — I’m not allowed to speak spanglish. Awesome.

Interesting Insect

If there was an award for the most awesome insect ever, this guy would win. Hands down. Found him today at the organic farm… had to follow him for a while until he quit flying off.

Taking pictures of insects from only 2″ away is not as simple as it might seem. Click the photo to see larger versions.

Amigos

Just a quick note. I am meeting the most amazing people here.

Marlin, de Nicaragua, who doesn’t ever check her email or use the computer lab because she’d rather spend her time reading books, studying, listening to music, or being outside. She also says it’s pointless, because she sees everyone who she would email anyway, and nobody back home in Nicaragua even has a computer.

Natalia, de Ecuador, who is in the Organic Horticulture class. She talks to me in english, and I respond in spanish. We traded email addresses today but then she was like “You’re going to be here for 10 weeks, right? So we don’t need email yet.” A+ We’re making plans to take over the cafeteria kitchen one day when it’s not busy so we can bake something. Awesome.

Rosa, de El Salvador, who was one of the first people to talk to me when I got here. It turns out that (coincidentally) she was at UGA back in the Fall as an exchange student, and knows some of the same people that I do. She has also made sure that I am doing OK, and understanding everything, and having a good time. Thankfully she is also in the Organic Horticulture class.

Victor, de Guatemala (I think?), who is just super nice and easy to talk to.

Patricia, de Paraguay, who is also really nice and likes to help me with my spanish.

Osmara, de Nicaragua, who worked with me out at the farm the other day.

And all of the awesome first year students that I work with on the farm twice a week.

Organic Cassava Aka Yuca. Produces tubers that are amazing when sliced and deep fried. Sprinkle salt on top, serve with a mix of ketchup and mayo. Mmmm mmm.
